Hugo Larsen

Landscape, St. Thomas 1905

Hugo Larsen spent 3½ years in the Danish West Indies, now U.S. Virgin Islands. His art reached its climax during this period which also became his most productive years. This is stressed by the fact that new - or at least unknown - pieces of art still appear in the market and often at unexpected places.

This oil painting might not be among the most vivid in the artist's West Indian production, but it does possess its own quiet charm. Measures are 49.5 x 41 cm., 69.5 x 60.5 cm. including the frame which is not original.

A Danish Landscape, undated

An idyllic and nostalgic Danish landscape whose scenery cannot be experienced any more.

The painting is undated and the venue is unknown. But there are indications that the scenery is from the area around the estate Hesselagergaard and the fishing hamlet Lundeborg in south-eastern Funen. In the provenance, a previous owner originated from the area of Svendborg. The pollarded poplars are a mark of Funen and the water in the background indicates that we are pretty close to Hugo Larsen's preferred whereabouts around Hesselagergaard and Lundeborg.

The measure of the painting is 65 x 90 cm., including frame 85 x 110 cm. The painting has been put on sale by a private Danish owner who can be contacted through me. See my contact information in the lower right corner of this page.

Nanny Vaslev, 1919

Definitely one of Hugo Larsen's better portraits. Particularly in his female portraits, he is extremely honest. Notice the melancholy, but also the touch of an erotic expression.

The market for portraits may not be with the sellers for the time being. A price tag of 900 € calls for a long term sale. But strictly looked upon as a piece of art, it's worth it.

The Beach at Julebæk, 1927

This small landscape from the beach at Julebæk - a small hamlet on the northern coast of Zealand northwest of Elsinore - is unusual in the sense that the rendering, particularly of the sky, is more expressionistic than impressionistic. Perhaps Hugo Larsen has been inspired by the contemporary symbolist and expressionist J.F. Willumsen.

The painting is ok. The price tag is 350 € which is in the right ballpark. Note though that the painting is unframed.

Consul General Anton Karlson, 1914

The portrait depicts consul general Anton Karlson (1861-1926), as evidenced by a book about Hugo Larsen published in 1950. It is most likely that the painting has been in (or close to) Copenhagen until recently.

The painting is very fine and typical of Hugo Larsen's portraits of the time. Whether that can justify a price label of 1,300 € remains to be seen.

Hugo Larsen: Merløsegaard, 1929

This painting from Merløsegaard - a large farm in the centre of Zealand in Denmark - is currently for sale from a private collection.

This is an oil on hardboard, 34 x 43 cm., signed in 1929. The painting is behind glass and the frame is an original Georg Kleis.

Hugo Larsen: Male Portrait, 1896

This early drawing of a bearded man is marked "96, Skelskør". It is currently for sale from a private collection.

This is a pencil drawing on paper, 20,5 x 18,5 cm., signed in 1896.
